The United States has disclosed that it had issued a warning to Russian authorities earlier this month regarding the potential of a terrorist attack targeting “large gatherings” in Moscow, prior to the tragic events that unfolded just outside the Russian capital, claiming the lives of at least 93 individuals in a mass shooting.
The revelation came from the White House, with National Security Council spokeswoman Adrienne Watson stating that the US government possessed information about a planned terrorist attack in Moscow, specifically targeting large gatherings such as concerts. This information had been shared with Russian authorities in accordance with the “duty to warn” policy, which mandates alerting nations or groups when the United States receives intelligence reports indicating threats of mass casualty events.
Coincidentally, preceding the events of March 7, the US Embassy had issued a warning advising Americans to steer clear of concert venues due to reports of imminent plans by extremists to target large gatherings in Moscow.
The tragic incident unfolded at the Crocus City Hall in Krasnogorsk near Moscow, where unidentified gunmen opened fire on a crowd gathered for a sold-out concert by Russian rock group Piknik. The attack resulted in the loss of 93 lives and left 140 others injured. The Islamic State claimed responsibility for the heinous act, stating in a Telegram statement that its fighters had targeted a large gathering of Christians, inflicting casualties and causing significant destruction before retreating to safety.
In the aftermath of the attack, Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs vehemently denied any involvement, dismissing accusations leveled against the country by Russian officials. The ministry condemned such allegations as a calculated ploy by the Kremlin to stoke anti-Ukrainian sentiment within Russian society, incite further mobilization of citizens to support aggression against Ukraine, and tarnish Ukraine’s reputation on the global stage.
